I like to think the deputy wasn't even shot at all, and "but I did not shoot the deputy" is a complaint rather than a protest of innocence.

I remember William Jefferson Clinton swearing under oath that "I did not shoot that deputy"... a sad day for US politics, but what can you expect from a man who paid money to go to a firing range but didn't pull the trigger, during his time at Oxford.
